A photo taken of 12-year-old boy AJ during his time at a boarding school in Nigeria shows how thin he was before he began his athletic journey.

After years of training in athletics, Joshua finally got into boxing in 2007 thanks to his cousin and professional colleague Ben Ileyemi.

And the strength training and rigorous conditioning he added to boxing had a profound effect on his physique.

Joshua looked unrecognizable compared to the perch boy who attended Mayflower Boarding School in Ikenne when he made his professional debut at the age of 18.

In an interview with Vogue, he said of his time as a boarding school student: “I spent about nine months in boarding school.

“Really hard. No nonsense. Education is, ‘I want you to be a doctor or a lawyer.’ No YouTube, no boxing.

“None of them, it’s a doctor or a lawyer, plain and simple. So education is very important in Nigerian schools and especially in boarding schools.”

Then he added: “Be disciplined; tomorrow through your mistake, you won’t make the same mistake again, so that’s why I believe mistakes are good. “

His transformation has continued throughout his much talked about career.

AJ weighed a heavy 18 stone for his career October 2017 victory over Carlos Takam but was significantly truncated two years later for do-or-die rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr, tilt scale at 16 stone and 13lbs.

However, he did reorder some sizes for ill-fated defense against Oleksandr Usyk last September, weighing in smidgen on 17 stone.

The Watford Warriors are currently gearing up for a thrilling rematch with the Ukrainian, who performed well in their game against Tottenham.

The match was originally scheduled for late March but is now live in April.

Promoter Eddie Hearn recently said: “I think April is the reality for that fight.

“Before you know it, it will be February and these games need a lot of organization.

“For us, the preferred date and place for that war would be the UK, in which case we would have to fight it outside, so we’re not really interested in fighting it on Sunday.” March.

“AJ has been training relatively solidly since the battle.

“Actually if you start your training camp in February, even April gets pretty packed but it’s a priority day for the fight and I think that’s realistic.”
