United have no Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford for the clash in the Midlands due to injury.

And with Martial unwilling to play for the club, United were forced to hand off youngster Anthony Elanga for his first Premier League match of the season.

Having ruled themselves out from traveling with their team-mates, United were also named only eight substitutes – including two goalkeepers.

Martial, 26, made it clear to interim boss Rangnick that he wants to leave the Theater of Dreams this month as Sevilla sought to secure his services.

And that seems to have happened this week when Rangnick confirmed Martial refused to travel with the team to Birmingham.

Speaking of his absence following a disappointing result against Villa, the German said: “He doesn’t want to be in the national team.

“He will be in the team normally, but he doesn’t want to.

“That’s why he didn’t come with us yesterday [on Friday]. “

It was reported earlier in the week how Sevilla are preparing an attempt to bring the former Monaco star to Spain on an initial loan deal.

But the French international could pay a price if he moves to La Liga like United ask them to pay at least half of his £130,000 a week salary.

In addition, United want a loan fee for Martial, with Marca said Sevilla was not willing to accommodate these requests.

Martial, who has featured in just seven top-flight games this term, has not appeared for United since his brief two-minute appearance in the 3-2 win over Arsenal on December 2. .

He has yet to play under a Rangnick shirt since he took charge following the win over the Gunners.
