Paraguayan prosecutor Marcelo Pecci, who had worked on high-profile mafia cases, was shot dead on a Colombian tourist island where he was honeymooning with his wife

A Paraguayan prosecutor known for his work fighting organized crime was killed on the Colombian tourist island of Baru on the same day he and his wife announced their pregnancy.

Colombian authorities said they believe the bombers came on jet skis to the beach where Marcelo Pecci was relaxing and killed him with three shots on Tuesday.

Pecci and his wife, Paraguayan journalist Claudia Aguilera, honeymooned at a resort near the Caribbean city of Cartagena after getting married on April 30.

They had announced Aguilera’s pregnancy on Instagram earlier Tuesday.

Ms Aguilera told Paraguayan media the couple finished breakfast and were approached by two men at a private beach connected to their hotel before her husband was shot.

He didn’t receive any threats, she added.

Pecci, 45, was known for his work on high-profile money laundering and drug cases, investigating the murder of a regional governor’s daughter last year and the case against Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho, who was arrested trying to enter Paraguay with a fake Paraguayan passport in 2020.

A delegation of Paraguayan police will join the investigation, Colombian police chief General Jorge Luis Vargas said in a video message on Tuesday.

“We have information, which is being gathered in an urgent effort and is confidential, that will help us identify it
responsible for this unfortunate event,” said General Vargas.

Officials from the United States will also assist the investigation, he said.

General Vargas offered a reward of about $122,000 for information that could help solve the crime and identify people suspected of being involved in the case.

“We need to identify her to urgently uncover her possible connection to what happened, to the Pecci murder,” he said.
adding that the authorities have deployed officers at airports and on the streets.

Paraguayan President Marcelo Abdo spoke of the “cowardly assassination of prosecutor Marcelo Pecci in Colombia
makes the whole Paraguayan nation sad”.

“We condemn in the strongest terms this tragic event and redouble our commitment to fight against it
organized crime,” he said on Twitter.
