Antidepressants are a lifesaver for many, and questioning their importance doesn’t help anyone

It is reported that between 7 and 10 per cent of people in Ireland suffer from a depressive disorder. Antidepressants play a central role in their treatment, particularly in people who are restricted to the point where they are unable to work, socialize, or even eat. Talk therapies play a much larger role on the milder end of the depression spectrum.

Depression is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition and as such needs to be discussed openly, but always based on evidence. Most of you know someone who has been depressed or had a significant episode of depressive illness. For those of us who work in this field, treating depression is our bread and butter. Creating unnecessary anxiety about antidepressants is not only dangerous, it’s also unethical.
