ANTIQUES The Roadshow specialist stunned one guest with the heartbreaking truth behind a doll found for £18.
In a classic episode of the BBC show, expert Nicholas Mitchell met a woman buying a wooden doll at a fair.
He began by saying, “This is probably one of the earliest pieces I see here today.
“And it’s exciting because it brings back the history and totally slaps you in the face. It’s very instant and exciting.
He then asked the woman what she thought the item was, and she said, “I think it could have been made like a doll in the 17th century.”
He replied, “I think you’re right, and I think what makes it so emotionally important is that this was almost certainly engraved by an older man.”
He later said he thought it was made in the late 16th century and added: “A member of a simple peasant family is in the country.
“Sometimes he goes to Winchester to see street fashion people.
“And he copied their dress, and I think it’s amazing. It was played with, it was treated, and it was loved.”
The woman later revealed how much she loved the item after buying it at a fair six months before coming to the show, and Nicholas said: “You must have paid quite a bit of money. .”
But he was given a huge shock when she said she had only paid £18 for it.
He said: “It’s not a lot of money, that’s crazy. How could anyone sell it for £18.”
He then told her she should have been charged at least £500 for it, shocking the woman.
Antique roadshow is available on BBC iPlayer.
