As Serious’s longest-serving professional dancer, Anton Du Beke should know the recipe for success is absorbing the judges’ opinions.

But when he traded sequins for pots on ITV’s Cooking With The Stars, he discovered that he hates being told what he does well and badly – at least in the kitchen.

Anton admits his dislike of TV judges is rather awkward, following the recent announcement that he has become one, since hanging up his dancing shoes to join this year’s Strictly Jury permanently. .

Anton, 55 – who hasn’t won the show for 18 years as a professional dancer – laughs: “I discovered that I hate being judged.

“I won’t lie to you, the judges were really tense with me, all critical. Which I suppose beating the subject is that I’m entering a cooking competition.

“The food I made was delicious, especially the pork dish which looked great and tasted great. What the judges thought about my process annoyed me. I’d rather they don’t tell me what they think about it.

“That is my biggest problem. I realized that I really can’t give a shit about what the judges thought.”

Anton is proud of how much he’s progressed on the cooking show, and while he may have had some laughs in the kitchen, he’s very serious – if not hopeful – about trying try to win.

“I can sing or dance around the kitchen, but that’s just the way I do things. I’m totally in it to win. I won’t join unless I think I can. “

Will it make up for not raising the glittering trophy?

“I never won it and that’s a pity. The award that I am looking forward to now is the National Television Award, for the best judge. It’s the one I really want. If I win, I’ll be the happiest bunny in town. “

In Cooking With The Stars, eight celebrities are paired with professional mentors who teach them how to cook a range of dishes — a format Anton is familiar with.

However, he admits he has never actually cooked in his life.

Anton, who co-stars with TV chef Rosemary Shrager, says: “I ate out every day until I met my wife. “I was always out on set, rehearsing, studying, dancing, and then life, television, theater. I’ve never been at home and I’ve never cooked a meal. “

Rosemary had to start with the basics – from teaching Anton how to turn on the oven and handle the knife.

“I didn’t bring any knowledge,” he admitted. However, Anton said he has now started cooking for his wife Hannah and five-year-old twins George and Henrietta.

“My wife is very supportive. She was always so nice to the fact that I had never cooked before. It makes no sense to say to me, ‘why don’t you cook something?’ because she knows I can’t. It’s like I said to her, ‘why don’t you dance something?’

“My children are now very impressed with my cooking, they love it. I am truly a talented chef, Or rather, a very talented chef with very few dishes that Rosemary taught me to cook.

“Even so, I still want to continue cooking, maybe I will go to Rosemary’s cooking schools when I have time. I love having a bit of cheese, and I love having a little hearty around the kitchen. “

Anton is now officially a stern judge of his own after standing in place of Bruno Tonioli in the previous series while he was on Dancing With the Stars in the US and was unable to travel due to the pandemic.

Bruno has now resigned and Anton will return to the council with Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse and Craig Revel Horwood, learning for the first time that the position is permanently his.

Anton believes his competition experience will help him beat his peers to beat the best judge. “I’ll be like last year’s me, you’re you,” he said. “I try to be supportive, I also see from the perspective that I was right where they were, I try to use my dancing experience on the show to understand where they are at the moment.

I don’t think a lot of Serious candidates like to be judged, either.
unless it’s positive. No one likes to be criticized, especially when you’ve tried your best.

“There is a difference between not being able to pull something out and it not going well at night. If I see something on the night that I know went well all week, I worry about it. I will try to support them and give them something they can use moving forward. “

There’s one thing he won’t miss being a dancer.

He said, “Yes, there are times when I am so sad that I don’t want to dance anymore, but not too much.

“The thing that I’ve always found hardest on the show is getting to vote, and I’m glad I won’t be voted down again. I hate it, but it’s part of the show.”
