Antonio Conte says he could be Tottenham’s version of Jurgen Klopp but only if the club spend ‘big money’.

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte said he would have no hesitation in devoting his long-term future to the club if he was guaranteed the same working environment that Jurgen Klopp works in at Liverpool.

onte, who joined Spurs in November, has consistently declined to say if he will be at the club next season and recently revealed his future is uncertain after meeting at the end of the season with chairman Daniel Levy and the Football managing director Fabio Paratici is decided.

He also suggested the key factor would be whether the club were able to live up to their ambitions and how quickly they would give them the tools to challenge Tottenham for the Premier League title again.

Klopp has been able to transform Liverpool from a club that had lost their place at the top of English and European football into arguably the best side in the world as they seek an unprecedented quadruple this season.

The German has received time and hefty support in the transfer market, with key signings Mohamad Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz helping to guide them to new heights.

Conte, whose side visit Anfield on Saturday night, would love similar support in north London and said spending money is the only way to guarantee success.

Asked if Spurs are now in a similar position to Liverpool when Klopp took over in 2015, the Italian said: “I don’t know but if I was sure that this kind of situation could happen I’d sign, you know?

“But also the time for Liverpool was easier than it is now because when Liverpool started this work with Jurgen they were a top team but not in the way they are now – so consolidated with an important manager, always the same team, big investment, big money spent on the transfer market.

“They also had the right space to improve and achieve this.

“Now I’m talking about this league in my opinion, it’s more difficult because the pitch isn’t that big.

“To close that gap you have to spend a lot of money because you have to buy important players. You have to know that, otherwise you cannot close this gap and always hope for a miracle.”

Spurs have been in contention for the Premier League and Champions League crowns under Mauricio Pochettino but a failure to back him up at key moments has seen them slide down the pecking order.

Conte says Liverpool is the example to follow.

“First of all, I think it depends on the desire of the club. I think Liverpool put Jurgen in charge seven years ago, they wanted to build something important and get Liverpool back to fighting for the Champions League, winning titles and continuing Liverpool’s important history,” Conte added.

“I think he might have signed a contract for three years and then extended it. Sure, if you want to create something important, it takes time, it takes patience – especially when you start working with a team that starts behind the top positions. It is not easy.

“You need time. I think we’ve done a really good job with the club in these seven months and the opportunity we had in January to sign two good players has helped us improve the quality of the team.

“I think we did a good job, but you certainly need time. Liverpool is a clear example. I don’t want to misrepresent anything, but maybe they’re fighting, right? You’re fighting with Liverpool at the beginning of Klopp’s journey, including qualifying for the Champions League.

“Maybe it took them four years to start winning.

“It’s not easy because you have a master in front of you, you need time, you need a big investment because you have to spend a lot of money if you want to be competitive and you have to try to fill that gap, otherwise you have to do it accept to stay in the middle and finish.”
