Apex Legends has shown some gameplay for Season 13, giving us a look at Newcastle in action and revealing a new part of the map that is literally the dead body of a giant creature.
respawn entertainment released a cinematic trailer last week officially revealing the newest character Newcastle, but the developer has now given us a look at the man in action, as well as a big change coming to Storm Point. In the theatrical trailer, we saw the Legends defeat a giant kaiju-like creature. Well, it turns out that part of Storm Point is now this thing’s carcass, just to spice things up a bit.
According to Polygon, which attended a media preview last week, lead level designer Jeff Shaw said it was conceived as “a big, stuffy loot piñata.” As well as something to make it a more competitive map. “We really wanted to do this additively without removing anything that we felt was important,” added Shaw. While it wasn’t clear in the first trailer if the creature would be some sort of player-vs-environment quest, it’s now confirmed that it’s definitely just a map change.
The Downed Beast, as the point of interest is now known, lies between North Pad and The Mill, two fairly valuable loot areas. There are four large wounds that players can enter through (yuck), or they can land on them via gravity cannons or ziplines. Items like tents and platforms set up by the Ecological Cleanup and Hazard Outreach team have been left behind for players to use for cover and purchase equipment. “We’re really hoping this Barometer will take some of the action away,” Shaw said.
We also saw in the movie trailer that there are these new security protocols that appear to be filled with good loot. This is actually a PvE addition, as teams can attempt to take down waves of Specter robots over the course of a minute to gain access to the weapons and gear inside. The door also closes after activation so that nobody can get in or out.
In terms of gameplay for Newcastle, there hasn’t been a breakdown of his actual abilities, but it seems like they match what was shown in the previous trailer. He can drop force fields wherever he wants to protect his allies and has an ability where he drags another player in front of him with a small force field shield to give them time to heal. One of his other abilities, which also summons a small shield, appears to be some sort of ramming attack, which will likely have some level of defense as well.
A few new skins were also shown, with Newcastle getting one that makes him look kinda like Iron Man and Fuse getting one that makes him look like a cyborg Arthur from Ghosts ‘n Goblins.
Apex Legends: Saviors launches next week, May 10th Nintendo switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Oneand Xbox Series X.
