Apple Cash virtual debit cards may transition from Discover to Visa

Apple Cash, formerly known as Apple Pay Cash, may switch from the Discover payments network to Visa, a new one reportt off MacRumors suggests. Visa has one much larger global network as Discover, which could be responsible for the move.

Since its launch in 2017, Apple Pay Cash has had a partnership with Green Dot Bank on Discover’s network, but in recent days users have noticed that virtual Apple Cash cards now sport a Visa logo. Virtual Apple Cash cards live in users’ Apple Pay mobile wallets, allowing them to send peer-to-peer payments through iMessage. They work like virtual debit cards and can be linked to a bank account or other debit card. Cashback earnings from Apple Card customers can also be paid out to Apple Cash accounts.

Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday, so we don’t know if this transition will happen for all Apple Cash users, or when. but MacRumors says that users who have Discover Apple Cash accounts can generate a new Apple Cash account number on the Visa network by disabling Apple Cash in their device settings (I haven’t been able to reproduce this on my own device so far) and then re-enabling it .
