Apple notified millions of iPhone owners of four big changes next week

APPLE is rolling out a huge new iPhone update to millions of users next week.

The long-awaited iOS 16.1 is set to deliver some really handy iPhone hacks – and we’ve got details on the top four upgrades.

Your iPhone will get the new update from October 24th, so check Settings > General > Software update.

Here are some of the biggest changes in iOS 16.1.

live activities

Back in September, Apple introduced iOS 16, which gives users the ability to massively customize their iPhone lock screens.

This included the ability to add widgets to the lock screen for the first time.

And in the upcoming iOS 16.1 upgrade, Apple is adding a brand new widget type.

They are called live activities and they provide real-time information about ongoing events.

The big advantage of this is that live sports scores can be viewed right on your home screen.

Of course, live activities are not limited to sporting events.

“Live Activity is a new feature that helps users keep track of things happening in real-time, such as: Like a sports game, workout, rideshare, or ordering food delivery, right from the lock screen,” Apple explained.

That means you can also track how far your food delivery is from your address or how you’re doing with sports.

These live activity widgets are temporary and appear at the bottom of your iPhone lock screen – unlike the current widgets, which remain at the top of the display.

Apple Fitness+

Apple Fitness+ is finally coming to iPhone without the need for an Apple Watch.

The service offers personalized workouts that stream to your eyes and ears via your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV — but previously required ownership of an Apple Watch.

It costs £9.99/$9.99 per month or £79.99/$79.99 for an annual subscription.

And in iOS 16.1, it can be used on iPhone even if you don’t have an Apple-branded smartwatch.

New battery icon

Apple is also tweaking the iPhone’s new battery icon with a slightly fancier design.

Following are complaints from Apple fans about the fact that the battery icon didn’t drain when it was drained.

The new icon – introduced last month with iOS 16 – finally added a number representing the battery percentage.

This was a long-requested feature, but some iPhone users weren’t entirely happy.

Currently, the battery icon shows up to below 20% full – no matter what the percentage says.

Now a new version of the battery icon will deplete when it’s empty.

Charge with clean energy

Apple is also adding a new Clean Energy Charging option for eco-friendliness.

“In your region, iPhone will attempt to reduce your carbon footprint by selectively charging when lower-carbon power is available,” Apple said.

“iPhone learns from your daily charging routine so it can be fully charged before you need to use it.”

The feature is optional, so you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to.

No support

The bad news is that not all users can get iOS 16.1.

If you can update to iOS 16 everything is fine, but it will still be missing on a very old iPhone model.

Here is a list of all devices supported by iOS 16 (and iOS 16.1):

If you can’t get the latest iOS, you’ll lose access to the latest security fixes.

These are critical patches that close vulnerabilities used by hackers to gain access to your systems.

If you can’t update to iOS 16, you’d better update your iPhone sooner rather than later.
