Apple retail workers at a New York store in Grand Central Terminal have begun collecting signatures to form a union, according to a report by The Washington Post.
The organizers, who are reportedly behind Fruit Stand Workers United, made the announcement in an update on the Pacific Blue Collar Organizing Committee website that they voted to join Workers United on February 21, 2022. Workers United is supporting the same group recent union organizing efforts at Starbucks stores across the country.
As noted by The post, organizers at the Grand Central location are distributing signature cards so employees can express their interest in forming a union. If at least 30 percent of workers sign it, organizers can petition the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to hold a union election. To date, there has not been an Apple Store that has successfully formed a union.
“Grand Central is an exceptional business with unique working conditions that make a union necessary to ensure our team have the best possible standard of living during these extraordinary times,” the organizers’ website said, citing inflation rates and pandemic store closures.
Already in February The post reported that several Apple Stores were preparing to unionize amid complaints that wages are failing to keep up with skyrocketing inflation and poor working conditions. The postApple’s latest report suggests that “at least three” other Apple business locations are making progress toward forming a union.
“We are fortunate to have incredible retail team members and we really appreciate everything they bring to Apple,” an Apple spokesman said in a statement The post. “We are pleased to offer full-time and part-time employees very strong compensation and benefits, including health care, tuition reimbursement, new parental leave, paid family leave, annual stock grants and many other benefits.” Apple and the NLRB did not immediately respond The edge‘s request for comment.
