IPHONE owners concerned about their privacy will soon be able to access a brand new security feature.

Apple is introducing a watertight lockdown mode in response to a major spy operation apparently hacking thousands that came to light last year.

But the feature is so “extreme” that you actually lose some iPhone functionality.

For example, apps, websites, and features are “strictly restricted” for security reasons.

And some will be “completely unavailable” altogether.

Any attachments you receive in a message, except photos, will be blocked immediately.

You can’t even see link previews.

FaceTime calls from unknown users are blocked when lockdown mode is on.

And you cannot connect your iPhone to a computer or any accessory.

Due to the strict nature of lockdown mode, it’s not really aimed at regular users unless they feel they might be a target of cyber snoopers.

Apple says it is designed to “prevent private companies from developing government-sponsored mercenary spyware.”

The tech giant has labeled Israeli cyber-espionage firm NSO Group – whose infamous Pegasus spyware was allegedly used to spy on politicians, journalists and activists – as the kind of operators lockdown mode aims to keep out.

How to enable iPhone lock mode

Lockdown mode won’t be available until the launch of iOS 16 – which is expected in a couple of months.

When it arrives, you should find it under settingsthen Privacy & Security.

Choose lockdown modeand scroll down to Activate lockdown mode.

You’ll get one final prompt warning you if lockdown mode is definitely for you.

If you are sure, tap Power on and restart.
