There’s actually a pretty simple reason why “Barbie Girl” didn’t appear in an official Barbie movie: after the song was released, Barbie bread maker Mattel tried to sue the band responsible, claims of copyright infringement. They also point to the song’s double lyrics, which include lines like “you can brush my hair, undress me anywhere” and “kiss me here, touch me there”, call them insulting and disparaging The Wall Street Journal. The case ended in federal court in 2003, where LA Times reported that Judge Alex Kozinski of the 9th U.S. Court of Appeals delivered an excellent response to the case, saying, “The parties are advised to remain calm.”
It’s so weird that the new Mattel-approved “Barbie” movie will attempt to work with Aqua after the toy company spent years taking them to court, it’s hard to imagine a candy-colored movie starring her Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling Not including the hit smash dance track. Gerwig’s film will be the first live-action Barbie film in a long line of animated films, and while plot details are largely unfinished, the all-star cast includes Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Michael Cera, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Rhea Perlman, Emerald Fennell, Alexandra Shipp, Hari Nef and Scott Evans.
“Barbie” hits theaters on July 21, 2023. In the meantime, we’ll hear “Barbie Girl” again.
