Are schools and colleges closed? Government update after Queen’s death

It is reported that the government has shared an update with school leaders in one E-mail on Thursday evening.

The email seen by school week, said: “We have now entered a period of national mourning which will continue until the end of the national funeral. Guidance providing advice to the public, businesses and institutions at the time of national mourning following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is issued by the Cabinet Office and is available on GOV.UK.”

The department added that schools and colleges “should remain open” during this time, saying: “While normal attendance is expected, principals retain the power to authorize furloughs for students in exceptional circumstances.”

The update suggested schools “to conduct special activities, hold gatherings, or adjust scheduled classes to reflect the time of national mourning and to commemorate the life of Her Majesty, The National Archives.”

The news of Her Majesty’s death was announced in a statement on behalf of the royal family.

The statement read: “The Queen died peacefully in Balmoral this afternoon.
