Are you sure your brake lights are working? Now is a good time to check this out

I know we are in midsummer and controlling the lights is far from our thoughts.

Time enough to worry about her when the long, dark evenings fall.

Well, maybe not. Aside from the fact that it’s illegal to have faulty lights, there’s the simple issue of safety.

And let me tell you about an experience that almost ended in tears for me because the car in front of me had malfunctioning brake lights.

I was driving down a narrow street in Wicklow the other afternoon.

There were two cars in front of me and a large tractor/trailer approaching in the opposite direction.

Everything was going well and I prepared to pick up some speed when the tractor passed, as apparently did the drivers of the two cars in front of me.

Apart from the fact that part of the way the first car made a sharp right turn without me being able to see much and the following car braked hard.

I assume that he braked because the brake lights, which, as we know, should have lit up red, gave no indication of this.

Luckily, my car – which happens to be the one I’m reviewing this week (the Mercedes EQE) – had the technology on board to detect an impending collision and avert an incident by dramatically slowing down.

You know you were close when the seat belt tightens around you.

I’m pretty sure there would have been enough road between me and the car in front to avoid an accident. But it was good to have the technology.

It wouldn’t have been necessary if the other car’s brake lights were working.

Are your? There’s never been a better time for a review.
