Arrest of teacher Enoch Burke expected in dispute with school over transgender students

Gardaí are expected today to arrest teacher Enoch Burke and take him to Dublin High Court for his alleged failure to comply with an injunction ordering him to stay away from his school.

On Friday, Judge Miriam O’Regan ordered Mr Burke, who allegedly interrupted a school church service and dinner to speak out against his request that he address a transgender student by the pronoun “she” and a different name, be taken to court response to alleged disregard of his order is provided.

The court made the order after being told on Friday that Mr Burke was currently “in an empty classroom” at Wilson’s Hospital School in Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath, in breach of the terms of his paid suspension and the injunction to stay away from him .

Mr Burke, who did not appear in court Friday and did not have legal representation, was made aware of the court’s decision to issue the warrant, the school’s attorney said.

The school alleges that although Mr. Burke was served with the restraining order and made aware of it, he continues to attend the school.

The lawyer said her client remains deeply concerned about the disruption caused by the teacher’s refusal to comply with the injunction and the terms of his suspension and is going to court as a “last resort”.

The attorney said Mr Burke was also made aware of the request that it could result in his imprisonment. It added that Mr Burke nevertheless “knowingly and intentionally violated the court’s order”.

She added that Mr Burke felt his suspension was unfair and violated his constitutional rights, and when approached by school officials he replied that he was “here to work”.

The teacher was suspended after interrupting a school memorial service to speak out against a request by the principal to address a student who wants to change their gender by a different name and to use the pronoun “she” when he asks them appeals.

Mr Burke, who the court heard does not agree with transgenderism, also allegedly reached out to the headmaster and continued to be vocal about the school’s stance after telling him she would speak to him when the time came.
