Arsenal are getting closer to tying academy star Khayon Edwards to a professional contract in north London.

The teenage sensation has been locked in talks for months about his future with the Gunners, who are interested from other quarters. Edwards was a star in the youth ranks and is now close to signing a professional contract with the Emirates. The 18-year-old is currently on a scholarship deal that expires at the end of the season.

Edwards has the same agent as Bukayo Saka, who arsenal also try to commit to an improved offer, and report a deal is nearing completion that will see the teenager stay in north London. ChelseaLeeds and newcastle were among those eyeing Edwards.

Edwards has scored 17 goals for the club’s youth this season, with most of his goals coming for the under-18 side. He has scored 16 goals and provided six more assists in as many games for the U18s. The teenager is one of several youngsters at the club who are currently in talks over a new deal.

Young Arsenal stars have continued to be given opportunities under Mikel Arteta. High hopes are pinned on midfielder Charlie Patino, who has received minutes this season. The teenager made his Carabao Cup debut as a substitute against Sunderland and scored in the 5-1 win. He was then handed his first start in the FA Cup.

The Gunners have made efforts to lower the average age of their squad and support youth. Much of their summer recruiting focused on bringing in players of a certain age. More changes are expected this summer and that could still benefit Edwards.

The young forward could see opportunities as Arsenal face the risk of losing Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah, with both men ready to leave for free when their contracts expire this summer.
