TOMORROW’s North London derby is a big doubt after injury ravaged Arsenal last night who applied to postpone the match.
The Premier League leadership will make a decision on the request this morning (Saturday) with the Gunners potentially short of up to 13 senior players.
Arsenal’s medical team last night assessed the fitness of Bukayo Saka, Kieran Tierney, Calum Chambers and Cedric Soares, who were all injured during Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool.
Martin Odegaard has missed the trip to Anfield after signing with Covid while Emile Smith Rowe, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Sead Kolasinac are also ruled out through injury.
Thomas Partey, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nicolas Pepe and Mohamed Elneny are all absent from the Africa Cup of Nations while Granit Xhaka is suspended.
Boss Mikel Arteta is trying to rush through the loan deal of Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo to defuse a growing crisis and has also recalled teenager Miguel Azeez after his loan spell at Portsmouth.
But both players will not be available for tomorrow afternoon’s clash with top four Spurs and Arteta admitted last night: “I don’t know if the game will be stopped. It can go one of two ways.
“We had concerns before the game against Liverpool and after the game we had some other problems.

“We cannot assess the squad yet because we cannot fly home after the game so we have just arrived at the training ground and all the boys are being looked after.
“It’s hard to say that honestly without judging our players, but what is very unlikely today could very well happen tomorrow.
“Things have taken a different turn for us recently when we were ready to play a match and it was canceled twice because the other team had problems.”
A club statement added: “We can confirm that we have applied to the Premier League to postpone Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.
“We have been reluctant to take this step but we have many players who are currently not in our squad due to Covid, injuries and players leaving their countries at AFCON.”
Arsenal asked to postpone the season opener at Brentford due to four players testing positive for Covid but that request was denied by the Premier League.
But it seems almost certain that last night’s claim will be approved if all injuries are confirmed this morning.
