Arsenal have dealt a serious blow to their hopes of signing Benfica forward Darwin Nunez this summer.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is keen to bring in a new centre-forward, with both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah likely to succeed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the club when their contracts expire at the end of the season. And the club had reportedly sent scouts to watch Benfica ace Nunez, although they face stiff competition to secure the player’s signature.

It comes as Bukayo Saka has opened up about being “embarrassed”. Barcelona Legend Sergio Busquets during his early days with the Arsenal fist team. And The Gunners’ hopes for a top four finish in the First League and fuse Champions League Qualification.

Arsenal have received a timely boost in their hopes of a place in the Premier League’s top four – after bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur suffered injury damage.

Spurs were three points clear of Arsenal in the Premier League table at the weekend as they clinched a 4-0 win over Aston Villa after the Gunners suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home Brighton. But Arsenal are one game ahead of Spurs, who have also suffered the bitter blow of having full-backs Matt Dohertys Campaign ended with a knee injury in the win over Villa.

The defender has been sidelined for 12 weeks after tearing the medial collateral ligament in his knee – just when he was on form for Antonio Conte’s side.

Saka recalls an ’embarrassing’ lesson

Bukayo Saka says Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets made him “embarrassed” when the two players met in preparation in 2019 – but it taught him a valuable lesson which he is still carrying on with him on the pitch.

The Gunners suffered a 2-1 defeat in the game after an Ainsley Maitland own goal against Niles canceled out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s opening goal before Luis Suarez struck the winner in the 90th minute. But it was an incident with Busquets that Saka remembers from the game that helped him see exactly what it takes to become an “elite” player.

Recalling the game, Saka said that when the Barca star was pressuring Busquets, he flipped him ‘so elegantly’ – and that’s when he realized the very best players are ‘all three steps ahead’.

Nunez transfer hit

Arsenal have dealt a serious blow to their hopes of signing Benfica forward Darwin Nunez this summer Manchester United to move in front of them in the queue for his signature.

Nunez looks set to leave the Portuguese side this summer after confirming he has switched agents to facilitate a move. The Uruguayan has attracted interest across Europe after scoring 27 goals in all competitions this year, leading to United and Arsenal sending scouts to watch his performance Liverpool last week in the Champions League.

But reports suggest that United, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are the three pole-position teams set to win the race to sign Nunez as initial talks are expected to conclude next week.
