Martin Odegaard’s arrival in the summer and his games in recent months have seen him become a key figure in the team’s fortunes and a former club legend has admitted he was wrong in his assessment of him.
Ödegaard’s arrival came after Mesut Özil left the club after being frozen out by manager Mikel Arteta and Özil’s recent clash with his new team’s management team may have justified Arteta’s decision.
Özil left the club in January 2021 to join Fenerbache but was suspended by the Turkish side just over a year later after a dispute with interim manager Ismail Kartal.
Arteta has Arsenal in fourth place and with goals coming from a range of players and not just the strikers, the blueprint for success may have been taken from his old mentor.
Here are Mirror football latest arsenal headlines.
Merson admits Odegaard’s mistakes
Martin Odegaard has revealed why he was so sought after as a teenager before making a sensational move real Madrid at just 15, and former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has admitted he was wrong about the playmaker’s talents.
Odegaard first joined the Emirates Stadium last season and was signed on a permanent basis in the summer, which will be a crucial factor for the club’s return to UEFA Champions League about a fourth place. Upon arrival, Merson wasn’t sure how the 23-year-old would adapt and believed the team needed more leaders.
But given Odegaard’s development under manager Mikel Arteta and the role he has played this season, Merson has changed his mind about the Norwegian star.
Arteta’s Özil decision justified
Mesut Özil’s time at Arsenal began with plenty of love both on and off the pitch from teammates and fans who were enthralled by the German’s talents.
But in the end, Özil was frozen by boss Arteta as the Spaniard tried to steer the team in a different direction, viewing Özil as a player who didn’t fit in with his plans for the future. Özil joined Turkish club Fenerbache in January 2021 and recent developments may have shown Arteta was right to leave the attacking midfielder.
Özil is currently suspended by the Fenerbache first-team and is not allowed to return to games or training for the foreseeable future.
Arteta follows Pep’s plan
Mikel Arteta has proved many doubters wrong, putting Arsenal on pole position to finish fourth and qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Having worked directly under Man City boss Pep Guardiola prior to his move to the Emirates Stadium, Arteta would have seen firsthand that there are many ways to build a successful team and it might look different than the norm. With City leading the league without a recognized striker, Arteta’s arsenal has benefited from goals scored by a range of different players.
With a blueprint perfected by Guardiola, the Spaniard is now using the same vision in north London for Arsenal success and a potential Champions League return.
