Merson made the claim after Aubameyang was sacked from Arsenal captaincy following a disciplinary infraction and ostracized from Mikel Arteta’s squad as he was left out of subsequent matchday squads and forced to train alone.

And Aubameyang proved revenge is a dish best served cold, as his post-match social media post showed he hadn’t forgotten Merson’s words.

Saliba will join France’s senior squad for the first time this week after continuing his development in his home country in recent years. The young centre-back was very excited when he arrived from Saint-Etienne in 2019 but failed to break into the Emirates first-team.

That led to him being loaned out at his old club before spending part of last season at Nice and then moving to Marseille for this season. And the youngster’s development plan has now been confirmed by his call-up to his national team.
