Chelsea vs Arsenal: pictures

Former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was outshone by a Gunners flop after suffering a dip in form for the new club Barcelona.

The Gabonese international started his Spain career in fine form, scoring 10 goals in just 14 games – finishing in double digits even faster than club legends Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi. But he has endured a bit of a rough patch after being left out of Barcelona’s starting line-up against Cadiz after being knocked out of the Europa League by Eintracht Frankfurt – and was outshined by an Arsenal flop that scored the winning goal.

It comes as Eddie Nketiah scored a brace at 4-2 First League to convince Chelsea. And Mikel Arteta has followed Arsene Wenger’s last wish for the club before giving up the job of manager at the Emirates.

Chelsea talking points

Arsenal have gained ground in the race to qualify for next season Champions League with a 4-2 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Timo Werner’s deflected shot quickly brought Chelsea level after Nketiah’s first goal, before captain Cesar Azpilicueta leveled a fine finish from Emile Smith Rowe before half-time.

Nketiah used weak defense to sweep home in the second half before Bukayo Saka banished his ghosts in the final penalty shootout of Euro 2020, converting a late penalty to spark a solid win for Mikel Arteta’s side .

It was a game full of talking points, including Nketiah’s brace and Arsenal’s defensive move.

Arteta follows Wenger’s wish

Mikel Arteta has helped fulfill Arsene Wenger’s last wish for the club before leaving the Emirates team.

Gunners icon Wenger left the north London club in May 2018 as he demanded “all Arsenal lovers should take care of the club’s values”. Following Arsenal’s involvement in the founding of the botched European Super League last year and a series of controversial incidents involving the club’s players, that has not always seemed to be the case.

And it took Arteta’s arrival for the club to start reapplying its traditional values.

Aubameyang outshined

Former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is in the midst of his most difficult period since joining Barcelona – and has even now been outshined by a Gunners flop.

The Gabonese international left the Emirates in acrimonious circumstances in January after his captain’s armband was removed. After a disciplinary offense in December, he had to train alone and missed all other squads on matchday. He had started his career well in Spain but his form began to falter thereafter.

He didn’t even start for his side’s game against Cádiz on Monday and made little impression after coming on as a second-half substitute. And the scorer of the winning goal will be a household name to Aubameyang and Arsenal fans – if Gunners Lucas Perez flops and scores the winning goal.
