MIKEL ARTETA is tipped to be handed a new two-year deal by Arsenal with the club determined to fend off interest from Manchester City.
The 39-year-old, who was at one time Pep Guardiola’s No. 2 at the Etihad, will be with Emirates until 2023.
His contract ends around the same time as Guardiola’s at Man City, with rumors swirling that he could be the successor to his Spanish compatriot.
However, the Gunners want to give their former captain a new contract – despite the club finishing eighth in the Premier League in their last two seasons.
Follow Daily mailArteta will be offered a new contract before the end of this season.
Any extension would see him get a pay rise to a salary of £5m a year in North London.
They say the former Everton midfielder is happy at the club and would welcome talks to extend his stay.
Just last month Arteta announced that he has there are no talks with Arsenal because he says he is not thinking about his future.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the 4-1 win over Leeds, he said: “No, we haven’t discussed anything like that.
“I think we have a lot of other priorities at the moment that are a lot more important than that.
“I do not know [if we will have talks in the summer]actually I didn’t think about that.
“I’m just trying to bring out the best in the team, trying to deal with any situation that we’re in at the moment. Everything will happen naturally.”
Meanwhile, Guardiola has also commented on his future ahead of City’s away clash with Southampton on Saturday.
He commented: “I’m not good at thinking long-term. My future always depends on the results.
“So let’s play Southampton [on Saturday]rest a little after that [carry on] and at the end of the season we’ll see what happens. ”
Before adding: “My decision [when to leave City] will be done with the club. They gave me everything so I couldn’t betray them. Or do anything wrong with them. That wouldn’t be nice.
“We made the decision together for me to come here and renew my contract twice [until now] and it will be the same [in future]: it depends on how they feel about me, how I feel in the club.
“Now I never think in 24 hours a day what will happen in the distance. In football, the end of the season is far away.”
