Gabriel Jesus is wanted by Arsenal and it proves Mikel Arteta’s ‘trial’ could really be underway, unlike older deals that have been made with Premier League rivals
Indeed acc football.londonTalks have been going on between Jesus and Arsenal’s director Edu since November. And the Brazilian made the ultimate “come and get me” plea with four goals conceded Watford on Saturday.
Signed by City as a promising youngster, Jesus is yet to reach his prime at the age of 25. But that shows Arsenal’s interest Mikel Arteta‘s “process” works, unlike some of their previous businesses.
A lot of money has been invested since Arteta took charge in December 2019 and they were the Premier League’s biggest spend last summer. They’ve spent £150million on six signings and are on the verge of one Champions League place for next season.
However, there is only one position that neither Edu nor Arteta have brought to the club since arriving and that is a striker. With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaving in January and Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah likely to follow in the summer, Arsenal are in dire need of at least one new striker.
Jesus could be the ideal purchase. He fits Arteta’s pattern of building a young team and a Brazilian connection with Gabriel Martinelli is causing plenty of excitement among fans. But their direction has changed since Arteta’s earlier years and Gunners supporters should be in good spirits.
arsenal had a difficult time signing players from rival clubs and they were seen as something of a laughing stock for having pushed players past their peak. Names like David Luiz and Willian were signed Chelsea As the Blues then searched for better substitutes and Arsenal were stuck chasing down stars considered surplus elsewhere.
If reports are true that Erling Haland is on his way to City, then maybe Jesus is also looking for a new club. But it’s a very different circumstance than her previous deal, and it shows Arteta’s “trial” is underway.

Arsenal have gone from aging players in certain areas to one of the youngest squads in the world First League, and her youth heralds a new era. But this is a testament to Arteta and his planning, and Jesus could be the next piece of the puzzle.
Jesus has struggled for consistent playing time at City but continues to prove his worth when used by Pep Guardiola. And the Brazilian has previously worked with Arteta while the Spaniard was an assistant coach at City.
Talks between Jesus and Arsenal representatives have reportedly been going on since November and Edu also has a close relationship with the City star’s agent. Arsenal are expected to introduce a transfer fee of £35million but Jesus may get more minutes by the end of the season to bid the asking price up.
City know Arsenal need a striker which means they have the power. And whatever they get can go towards the mammoth deal rumored to be offered to Haaland as he looks set to become the Premier League’s highest-paid player Daily Mail.
But where, as in the past, Arsenal may have backed away from a deal and pursued a cheaper, shorter-term option, they appear to be adamant and will do whatever it takes to sign Jesus. If they are successful it will be a clear indication of where Arsenal are headed under Arteta.
