ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE could one day replace human workers in four major industries, experts have claimed.
In a new one Opinion piece for CNNsays Peter Bergen that experts have been speculating for some time that AI will replace humans in areas such as customer service, insurance and manufacturing.
But now Bergen has raised concerns that AI could also overtake writers.
“I’ve been hearing about the AI chatbot ChatGPT for a few days,” writes Bergen.
“Users of the tool claim to be able to write coherent essays and comments in seconds.”
“So I signed up to try it out and asked it to perform a task that I had previously thought required at least some level of skill. I asked ChatGPT to ‘write a Peter Bergen style comment’.”
The journalist shared the AI-generated opinion piece, arguing that while it was impressive, it contained some factual errors.
Bergen attributed the errors to the fact that ChatGPT was created in 2021 and may not be aware of current events.
He then asked the AI-powered tool a historical question about the role of women in the French Revolution.
The answer, Bergen said, does not exactly match the work of leading historians, but “suggests a future where college students are likely to be able to submit long and complicated papers entirely generated by AI.”
“Then what does it mean to be educated in a liberal arts college? asked Bergen.
He continued, “So I enter 2023 with a sobering realization. My career as a CNN commentary writer, which began in earnest over a decade ago, may not be exactly over yet, as AI-generated commentaries make factual mistakes — just how.” Humans, although these are usually caught during the fact-checking process.
“Nonetheless, my writing career could still go down the route of the grocery checkout jobs that automation has eliminated.”
He noted that as AI tools get smarter, it also becomes harder to distinguish AI-authored comments from “real” human comments over time.
“As a writer and professor, that makes for a dystopian future. (I promise that feeling wasn’t created by AI),” Bergen concluded.
What is ChatGPT?
Technically, ChatGPT is a language model that can produce text.
It is based on the GPT 3.5 model developed by San Francisco-based AI research lab Open AI.
The stunning app can talk to you like a human, write poetry, give you baking tips, solve complicated puzzles and much more.
