“It is with heavy hearts that we have made the difficult decision as a family to say goodbye to Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” Kim Kardashian announced on Instagram in September 2020.
Fourteen years and 20 seasons of internet-shattering opulence, a significant part of the cultural zeitgeist was finally coming to an end. Except it really was just the end of the show Keeping up with the Kardashians (KUWTK). Just weeks after Kim’s sad announcement, Disney announced a multi-year deal with the family for “new global content” on their streaming platforms – Hulu in the US and Disney+ for the rest of the planet.
The new global content, which began streaming in Ireland on Thursday, appears to be an extremely similar reality format to the previous series, albeit now simply named The Kardashians. And to be honest, why would the most famous family in the world — famous for being famous — leave the television show that made them famous in the first place? All the farewell fanfare for nothing.
Celebrating the brand new chapter of the Kardashian saga Let’s look back at her best and naughtiest Irish moments and connections.
The honeymoon in Portlaoise
On a nondescript May afternoon in 2014, Amy was working the matinee shift at the Odeon cinema on Church Street in Portlaoise. A man approached and asked to pick up two tickets to an Angelina Jolies screening malicious.
Amy obeyed and then watched as he handed it to a striking woman. “It was Kim Kardashian in Portlaoise,” she told Vogue Williams and Joanne McNally in her podcast, My therapist ghosted me, last year. “She came up to the counter and said, ‘Hi, can I have a little popcorn and a little Diet Coke?’ And I forgot she had loads of money…so I thought, “It’s cheaper to get a medium sized one.” She said, “Sure, thanks.” And then, all of a sudden, Kanye shows up and I’m like, ‘I can’t handle this’.”
video of the day
This marked one of the more surreal moments in the Kardashianverse. After predictably grandiose weddings in Paris and Florence, complete with rehearsal dinners at the Palace of Versailles and private performances by Lana Del Rey and Andrea Bocelli, chances were the honeymoon would involve luxurious nirvana on a powder-white sandbar somewhere in the South Pacific.
All the more surprising when the newlyweds landed at Cork Airport for a five-day whistle-stop tour of stately homes, rolling hills and multiplexes in the Midlands. The lovebirds reportedly hired a handsome bunch, Castle Oliver, outside the Limerick village of Ardpatrick, cycled through the Ballyhoura Mountains and enjoyed a few pints at the eatery before moving east to Ballyfin Demesne, outside Portlaoise, another majestic property with a special flair Downton Abbey feel.
And while the luxe stays and scenic tours provided a romantic backdrop, two admissions to the cinema in one day proved a bit confusing. Right – after the recording maliciousKim and Kanye attended another big screen just hours later – this time at the IMC in Tullamore for a screening of The other women, with Cameron Diaz. “If I ever decide to make a Tullamore movie theater a part of my honeymoon someone please kill me,” one tweeted at the time. Another person tweeted, “Most normcore honeymoon imaginable.” Several reports claimed Kim hated the trip, but then she tweeted, “Had the best and most relaxing romantic honeymoon in Ireland.”
The time Anna Daly scored an exclusive deal with Khloe
Despite his appetite for the limelight, it’s nearly impossible to get an interview with the sought-after family. So it was a coup for Anna Daly, TV personality and boss of Little Bliss Lifestyle Mark when she secured a one-on-one with Khloe Kardashian in 2013 Ireland AM. She calls it “an incredible experience.”
“Khloe arrived just missing gold stars swirling around her body. She had all the star power you could imagine — a big smile and a glamorous team that makes a fuss when they walk,” recalls Daly.
“There were crews that shot them and crews that shot them. It was an unforgettable sight. Khloe is tall and warm, bright and savvy. She gave me an interview full of fun and good humor. We laughed and she hugged me tightly before we left.
“Funnily enough, after we took pictures together, their ‘people’ went through them and deleted some of them. She’s never the bad guy – she’s got people who do. But I really think she’s one of the good guys!”
In addition, Daly and her producer were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements. “They said, ‘You have to sign these because you might be in an episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians.’ My producer Sally almost fell into the water. I wasn’t far behind her!”
The Barber of Ballinteer
#Say what you will about their contouring, but the Kardashians always have flawless hair. And that’s largely thanks to Dubliner Andrew Fitzsimons, a really good Ballinteer boy who left school at 13 and apprenticed in a saloon on South William Street before going to the Big Apple and qualifying at a test Shooting with a young Kendall Jenner.
Impressed with his work, the model recommended Andrew to his sister Kourtney, who hired him as her full-time stylist, and pretty soon he was twisting and teasing the whole family’s locks.
“Kourtney, Khloe and Kim are the most down to earth and sweet people I’ve ever met. They’re always on time,” he said in 2017. Fitzsimons has performed with us ever since KUWTK several times and launched a hair care range of the same name – supported by the famous family, of course.
In 2015, Galway girl Shahira Barry was pursuing her Hollywood dream in LA when a production assistant told her she looked like a Kardashian. Barry, a former teacher from Athenry, was later cast as Kim Kardashian’s stand-in in a promotional shoot for E! booked, the then television station KUWTK. What is a deputy you ask? Someone who resembles an actor or personality and replaces them in front of the camera for technical purposes such as lighting and framing before filming.
“I was very flattered and it was definitely a confidence boost,” Barry wrote on her blog at the time. “Kris, Kylie, Kendall, Kourtney, Kim and Khloe were all there and I think they look better in person.”
The time when Kim’s bestie was supposed to be the hostess Xpose
In 2017, Jonathan Cheban – a fixture on KUWTK as Kim’s closest confidante – had just completed a stint at Celebrity Big Brother in London, as TV3 (now Virgin Media) announced his guest co-host at the now-defunct pop culture giant.
At the time, Cheban said, “I’ve done a lot of television work in the US and UK, but never in Ireland, so I can’t wait.” Hours before his Xpose However, the celebrity’s best friend canceled the debut due to “unforeseen circumstances”. In truth, Cheban appeared to have dropped out at the last minute to celebrate in the Hamptons instead – as evidenced by his revelation and then deletion of his travel plans on social media this morning.
The time Kim made a fangirl because of Nicola Coughlan
“We were texting and she was asking about the show and what happened and she’s so nice,” Nicola Coughlan said last year of her relationship with Kim, a self-confessed woman Bridgeton Fanatic.
The Oranmore, Co. Galway star, who publicly interacted on social media in 2021, revealed the Kardashians inspired the Featherington family’s onscreen dynamic. Since then she has invited Kim on a matching costume for the Netflix series. “She has a Bridgeton WhatsApp group. She’s seen it six times or so,” Coughlan said.
