There’s something about castles that brings out the deeper thoughts in us. Perhaps it is the vision of history that radiates from its ancient walls, or perhaps these boys’ fantasies of exploits, gallant knights and daring sword fights. Anyway, I’m always drawn to these fortified citadels and happy to stroll through their addictive antiquity. And often I know more than I go in – like last week.

fter a “me time” afternoon, as the sun bathed the city in an early autumn glow, the grounds of Blarney Castle called for a visit. To avoid the snakes climbing to kiss the stone, a lonely bench under a sprawling oak tree made perfect sense. Just as I was seated, I was joined at the other end by an elderly gentleman with an elegant demeanor and classic tailoring.
