Record Industry, one of Europe’s largest vinyl pressing plants, and Bertus Distribution, one of Europe’s largest independent vinyl and CD distributors, merge.
With 33 presses, Record Industry, headquartered in The Netherlands, claims to be one of the largest and most automated vinyl pressing plants in the world.
Also headquartered in the Netherlands, Bertus was founded in the early ’70s and claims to be “an essential international link between record shops, wholesalers, record labels and e-commerce companies”.
Record Industry and Bertus Distribution are longstanding partners of the record label Music On Vinyl.
The companies say the label has since grown into one of the largest vinyl-only labels in the world.
The companies say the merger will allow the newly formed group to further invest in “wide-ranging services in the music industry for artists, labels, publishers and consumers.”
The combined company says its pressing capacity will “virtually double” to around 25 million units per year.
The group will also continue to invest in IT and logistics systems “to ensure smooth growth”.
The merger of Record Industry and Bertus Distribution follows a year in which record sales have skyrocketed worldwide.
According to the Recorded Music Body IFPI, CD and vinyl combined increased their global retail revenues $5.0 billion in 2021, from $4.3 billion in 2020.
In the U.S., vinyl revenue grew 61% to $1.04 billion in 2021, according to the RIAA, marking the format’s 15th consecutive year of growth.
CD revenue also rebounded in the US after the 2020 Covid lockdown hit.
In 2021, US CD sales rose 21% to $584 million, the first year-over-year increase in CD sales since 2004.
