An evidence book for a man charged with the murder of schoolteacher Ashling Murphy is still being prepared, a court has heard.
Ozef Puska, 31, is facing a judge and jury trial at the Central Criminal Court after the DPP formally filed charges two weeks ago.
This morning the defendant made his sixth appearance at Cloverhill Circuit Court via video link.
Mr Puska, with an address at Lynally Grove, Tullamore, Co Offaly, is charged with the murder of Ashling Murphy, 23, in Cappincur, Tullamore.
The 23-year-old was fatally attacked while jogging along the Grand Canal in Tullamore on the afternoon of January 12, 2022.
Dressed in a dark green polo shirt and light gray sweatpants and a face mask, Mr Puska was speaking to confirm his name when prompted by the court register.
Mr. Puska also confirmed that he could see and hear the court.
A Slovak interpreter was in court to assist him.
Judge Victor Blake said “Good morning” to the defendant and the interpreter.
Garda Sergeant Olwyn Murphy said the evidence book was still in preparation and a number of reports were pending. She asked for a four-week break.
Defense attorney Sharon Rossiter said there was only approval for a two-week adjournment.
Judge Blake asked Sergeant Murphy if she could explain what reports are pending.
Sgt. Murphy said she couldn’t.
Judge Blake said he would need better information at the next court hearing. He said every effort should be made to expedite the evidence book.
Judge Blake remanded Mr Puska to appear before Cloverhill Court again on April 6. He said an interpreter would be needed at the next appointment.
“Thank you,” Judge Blake said to Mr. Puska and the interpreter.
“Okay,” said Mr. Puska, nodding to the court.
Mr Puska was originally brought before a special late-night session of Tullamore Circuit Court in January charged with the murder of the teacher.
Ms Murphy, a talented Irish traditional musician and a graduate of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, was working as a teacher at Durrow National School at the time of her death.
