Ask the Expert: I’d like to sell my house to pay off my granddaughter’s college debt, but I want to be fair to everyone

I have a granddaughter who lives in America with my son and daughter-in-law. My other two grandchildren live in Ireland and of course I see them more often and this is a great joy for me as I lost my wife a few years ago. As a result, I feel guilty about this girl and was shocked to learn recently that she is carrying well over $25,000 in college loans (even after President Biden’s recent intervention regarding student debt) that may not allow her to continue her education to continue. I would like to help. My house is my only real asset but it is valued at around €800,000. If I were to sell it, which I’ve thought about for a long time, what could I offer this girl now, and can I leave the others who aren’t teenagers a similar amount when I’m gone? I want to be fair

Sinead answers: What a lovely grandfather you sound. In the US, student debt is a way of life that accompanies many into middle life, compared to here, where it is at least rather short-lived.
