At the places we hold dear, glimpses of our past are waiting to be remembered

I watched the All Ireland football final last week and like most of the country I cried out for Galway despite being in the heartland of a less successful Connacht County. I was sitting with my partner’s mum and her two sisters in Aclare, Co Sligo. These women love their football and aged 89, 86 and 93 they have seen quite a few games in their lifetime.

As Sligo women, they’re used to losing, so they enjoy small triumphs and the entertainment the games bring them. Sligo have never won an All-Ireland, while Kerry calls it a famine when they don’t win one for eight years.
