At the Top of the Food Chain – Chapter One tops Life’s 100 Best Restaurants list

Dublin’s Chapter One was voted Ireland’s best restaurant by independent reviewer Lucinda O’Sullivan of the Sunday Independent in her list of the 100 Best Restaurants.

he Dublin 1 establishment, described as a “sleek, elegant restaurant that reaches stratospheric heights on all fronts”, received two Michelin stars this year and tops the list published in today’s issue Life Magazine.

Other restaurants in the top 10 include the ‘tempting’ Lady Helen in Co Kilkenny in Thomastown’s Mount Juliet Estate and Lignum in the remote East Galway village of Bullaun.

Liath at Blackrock Market in Co Dublin, which was awarded two Michelin stars this year, also gets a special mention, while George V at Ashford Castle in Co Mayo, Aimsir at the Village at Lyons in Co Kildare and Dax on Upper Pembroke Street in Dublin 2 were also on the list.

Celebrity chef Neven Maguire’s MacNean House in Co Cavan, a family business which Lucinda says has become “a superb destination restaurant and stylish guest house” in the village of Blacklion, is also mentioned.

In Northern Ireland, Ox Belfast is the crème de la crème of restaurants, coming in at number one there after ‘knocking their socks off’ the competition, while Michael Deane’s Michelin-starred Eipic comes in second.

Also on Lucinda’s list is 28 At the Hollow in Co Fermanagh, run by husband and wife team Glen Wheeler and Zara McHugh, who were previously Executive Chef and Front of House at MacNean House and Restaurant before opening their own restaurant in Enniskillen three years ago, and then move last year. Other best restaurants in Northern Ireland are Browns in Town in Co Derry, Dumpling Library, Belfast and Watermill Lodge in Co Fermanagh.

In compiling the list, Lucinda said she “don’t judge restaurants solely by the artwork on a plate or whether they’ve won a rubber tire award.” “I don’t particularly like sitting in overly rich, hushed rooms in silent adoration, cooing over eaten ferns.
