Athletics sends Montas, Trivino to the Yankees

The Oakland Athletics have cut ties with more players after two more names were reportedly given.

The A’s reportedly sent pitcher Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino to the New York Yankees on Monday, August 1.

In exchange, Oakland gets prospects JP Spears (RHP), Ken Waldichuk (LHP), Cooper Bowman (2B) and Luis Medina (RHP).

It also ends weeks of speculation about 29-year-old Montas’ future when the deal was first reported by Jeff Passan ESPN.

This season, the Dominican made 19 starts with the Athletics, where he defeated 109 batters in 104 2/3 innings en route to a 3.18 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.

He moved to Oakland after being traded by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016.

It would be good to know that his contract remains under team control until next season.

On the other hand, Trivino was 1-6 this MLB season and held a 6.47 ERA and 10 saves in 39 appearances.

It will be interesting to see how Waldichuk looks in Oakland while Medina was 10th in the Yankees’ system, followed by Sears at 20th and Bowman at 21st.

Athletics’ latest move comes after the team parted ways with other household names. That list included Matt Olson, Sean Manaea, Chris Bassett, and Matt Chapman.

“I’m feeling great. I’m really looking forward to it,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said in a report from[Montas] is a great pitcher. There were rumors about him in the first half of the season. I’m happy that we were able to secure a deal for him. Because of his talent, particularly his performance over the past few years, I’m looking forward to adding him to the mix.”

Although the Yankees appeared to have added big names, there was some bad news on their end as well, when starting pitcher Luis Severino was included in the 60 Day IL.

Severino has been sidelined since July 14 with what was originally described as a substandard lat.

But it appears the injury is far more serious as the two-time All-Star will be out for at least two months.
