A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to kidnap a 16-year-old girl.
Police are looking for witnesses after the young girl was approached by a man in a car as she was walking down Anglesey Avenue in Hailsham just before 6.50pm on Friday 22 July.
Reaching Goodwin Place in the Horsebridge area, she became aware of a car described as a purple or silver BMW 3 Series, which appeared to be following her, police said.
“As she then turned left onto Hempstead Lane, the driver yelled at her but other drivers, probably unaware of what was happening, yelled at him to move on and the car drove away,” a police spokesman said.
“The girl was unharmed, the police were informed immediately.”
After investigations and a search of the premises, a 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnapping and threatening behavior.
After questioning, he was released without charge.
Detective Sergeant Jess Langlands said the incident was being treated as an isolated case but the police investigation was continuing.
“If you were in the Anglesey Avenue area early Friday night and saw anything of what happened, we need to hear from you as soon as possible.
“We know other people, including drivers, were nearby. So if you can help please contact us either online or by calling 101 quoting serial number 1121 dated 07/22.”
