Attorney General Helen McEntee Disputes Sipo Account Over Donations By Tayto Park Owners

Minister of Justice Helen McEntee Disputed the Standards in the Public Offices Commission’s (Sipo) account of donations to her from Tayto Park owner Ray Coyle.

Internal Sipo emails show that committee officials raised concerns about a €4,200 political donation from Tayto Park owner Ray Coyle made over three checks.

Sipo official Brian McKevitt recalled a conversation he had with another official who told him the minister’s congressional aide told him it was a payment “from three of Miss McEntee’s uncles.” “.

However, Ms McEntee has now moved to dispute the account, saying this has gone unspoken.

“I’m not accusing anyone of lying, I’m simply saying it wasn’t told,” she said.

“Without trying to hide or not provide information, I have been very clear about this.”

Ms. McEntee said that her office raised the matter with Sipo and provided all requested documents.

“My office pointed this mistake out to Sipo and then provided any information they requested and then deleted all the information we gave them,” she said.

“This is a simple error. We fixed it ourselves, it was fixed, allowed and cleared.”

A party commemorating Mrs McEntee’s first election to the Dáil party was held at Tayto Park in Ashbourne, Co Meath.

Ms McEntee said that apart from the three checks, she had not received any further donations from Mr Coyle, despite receiving a €5,000 deposit after attending an event Mr Coyle was also present at.

“I’m not getting any more donations,” she said. “Whatever I got from him, I made it clear and I signed up.”

“We do not comment on compliance matters or personal correspondence between Sipo and relevant people with whom the Commission works,” said a Sipo spokesperson.

Three separate checks worth €1,400 were given to the minister just before the general election in 2020.

The checks bore the names of various companies and were deposited into the minister’s personal election account. Much of the money was returned to Mr. Coyle almost a year later.

However, according to Sipo’s instructions, politicians must return offending donations rules within two weeks. Attorney General Helen McEntee Disputes Sipo Account Over Donations By Tayto Park Owners
