New South Wales all-rounder Jack Edwards pulled off a stunning catch and bowled to sack West Australian star Josh Philippe during a Sheffield Shield match
Australian Cricketer Jack Edwards capitalized on a brilliant catch-and-bowl opportunity for New South Wales in their recent clash between the Sheffield Shield and Western Australia.
Edwards scored a breathtakingly low catch from his own bowling to sack the dangerous Josh Philippe for 32. After Philippe scored a leading edge, Edwards dived forward and took the catch, doing a roll forward.
“Oh this is great catch and bowling, fantastic stuff from Jack Edwards. He’s about 6ft 6in tall and he went right around the ankles to pull off one of the great catch-and-bowls we saw at the Sheffield Shield this summer.
“It went so low, it’s unbelievable. We’ve seen some fantastic catches this summer, but look at this!”
The wicket was Edward’s third in the innings, with the 21-year-old finishing with numbers 3-58. Western Australia eventually declared in its first innings, 356-6, with former Australian opener Cameron Bancroft scoring 100 points.
In response, New South Wales was bowled for 208, with Jason Sangha and tail-ender Chris Tremain the only players to break fifty. New South Wales narrowly avoided the episode, forcing Western Australia to bat again.
However, with day two ruined by persistent rain, Western Australia didn’t have enough time to force a result as the game ended in a draw. Looking back on the result, Western Australia coach Adam Voges said: “The only benefit of bowling once is that you don’t put a huge workload on your bowling squad.
“With such a short processing time, hopefully everyone is fit and ready for the next week. It’s a simple equation for us, we need to win next week and if we can do that then hopefully we can host the Shield finals where we have a lot to play for .
“It’s been a long summer for us, we’ve spent a lot of time in the east and put ourselves back in front of our family and our fans [so] we have this incentive to reach a home final.”
