Australia v England LIVE Rugby: Latest updates from crucial Sydney test – Owen Farrell takes early penalty for England

England and Australia face off again as the two rivals clash in a major series decider at Sydney Cricket Ground, which will host a Test match for the last time.

England are looking to repeat their run of wins Down Under six years ago, with Eddie Jones’ side responding to their opening defeat in Perth by beating the Wallabies in Brisbane last weekend.

It sets up the decider perfectly as the legendary SCG host the recent duel between England and Australia, albeit a rarity in this particular sport. England manager Jones has spent the week urging his side to follow suit in the epic decider State of Origin as the Wallabies prepare for another tough battle.

“It’s great for rugby that we have a decider. We saw how big the decision maker was in State of Origin and how he captivated the fans,” said Jones. “We want to put on a similar show against Australia, a really good, tough game of rugby on historic ground and lighten up rugby a bit. It’s about whether we can find the right balance between aggression and control, wildness and calmness.”

TO ATTEMPT! AUSTRALIA 5-3 England (Tom Wright attempt, 25 minutes)

A brilliant Australia score!

Australia 0-3 England, 23 minutes

An impressive shot by Freddie Steward, but hot by Michael Hooper! Two moments of real skill from two great exponents of very different arts: first, Steward took command of Reece Hodge to win back Marcus Smith’s Up-and-Under, but then was forced to excel as Hooper jackals.

Australia 0-3 England, 22 minutes

In fact, both sides find open grazing land on the edge. It’s Tommy Freeman galloping again, this time more directly on the left wing.

Samu Kerevi is pretty good at snagging a piece of Freeman, allowing Marika Koroibete on the cover to get the England wing in touch.

Australia 0-3 England, 21 minutes

England’s mouth is making little ground so they’re going back in the boot. Australia continue to cause problems in the outside channels, Marika Koroibete sweeps Guy Porter out of the way but Marcus Smith rushes over to make a good cover attack. Nic White’s box kick downloads and Hunter Paisami can’t resist hitting the loose ball to the floor.

Australia 0-3 England, 19 minutes

Australia vary their attacking play well, Scott Wisemantel’s touches are evident as the Wallabies use clever inside balls and substitutions to pose many questions for the English defence. They are about to be answered at the moment, with Australia having to follow rather tamely after all.

England clean long and Australia return with a healthy nudge to the right that settles in Freddie Steward’s hands just above the touchline, 30 yards from his own line with no prospect of a fast lane out.

PENALTY! Australia 0-3 ENGLAND (Owen Farrell penalty, 18th minute)

No mistake by Owen Farrell – England had little possession in the Australian half but the visitors took the lead.

Australia 0-0 England, 15 minutes

Nice from England! A striking outside jump from Marcus Smith and then a nice pass to put Freddie Steward into space. The full-back deceives properly and sends Tommy Freeman on.

The Northampton youngster, who was quiet but effective last week, fires through retreating Australian defenders but a handling error ends England’s chances to capitalize. However, there was a penalty to fall back on – and Owen Farrell will have his first shot on goal.

Australia 0-0 England, 14 minutes

Another suspiciously flat Australian pass goes unnoticed as the Wallabies begin to gush in attack, first Samu Kerevi and then Rob Valetini across the payline.

But that’s excellent from Jamie George, who looks to snatch Dave Porecki’s pivot pass from Noah Lolesio’s hands and end Australia’s chances of exploring an overlap to the right.

England kick long and Tom Wright watches it carefully over his own line, just remembering to put it down before England can sneak in.

Australia 0-0 England, 12 minutes

England, however, are enjoying the scrum – this time a full penalty as they go down.

Jamie George’s lineout dart also hits the bull’s eye, but England soon fails. Michael Hooper deftly grabs Danny Care’s arm as the scrum half tries to get past the halfway point.

Australia have dominated the territory so far – more than 80% of the game so far has been played in the English half, despite remaining scoreless.

Australia 0-0 England, 10 minutes

Australia almost reopens England! They attack a big blindside, this time an inside ball to Taniela Tupou, a nifty variation even if the pass appears to the prop forward.

It doesn’t matter, though, because Tupou’s pass is knocked on. You’d suspect officials would have called that back had the Wallabies converted, but it’s another moment of concern for the English defense unit drilled by Anthony Seibold.
