Australian comic Sam Campbell wins top prize at Dave’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards

Australian comic Sam Campbell won top prize for his show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

After a “really outstanding” year, the judges at the Dave’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards have announced Campbell as the winner of their best comedy show.

The honor, which is now 40 years old and formerly known as the Perrier Award, will see Australians collect £10,000 in prize money.

Campbell was presented with his award by Jordan Brookes, winner of the last time the award was presented in 2019, and four-time nominee Russell Kane, who won the 30th anniversary award for the show. Best comedy show of 2010.

Lara Ricote, a Mexican-born deaf artist raised in the US, has been awarded the £5,000 prize after being named the best newcomer.

The award, sponsored by TV channel Dave, also presents a £5,000 panel prize to Best in Class, a community-funded profit-sharing initiative that helps working-class comedians from across the UK performing at this year’s Fringe.

Nica Burns, director of Dave’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards, said it was a “really outstanding international year”.

Speaking of Campbell, the sixth Australian to win the award, she said his show was “original, sometimes surreal” and full of jokes that were “often unexpected”.

She added: “He changes gear throughout and takes his audience on a journey full of laughter.”

Burns said Ricote’s debut at the festival was “an absolute delight”, describing her as “totally different and very funny”.

The director said, “She’s an outstanding artist, but she’s hard of hearing.”

Speaking of the awards overall, she said: “We have the most extensive representation across the country, from Scotland to Sussex and everywhere in between.

“The jury’s award for Best in Class and support for those who can’t afford the cost of performing in Edinburgh captures the spirit of this year’s Fringe.”

Cherie Cunningham, channel director at Dave, said: “We are on the moon at Dave to support and celebrate these amazing comics.

“This year the standard is very high and we are delighted to crown such well-deserved winners. We look forward to seeing Lara and Sam on Dave again soon.” Australian comic Sam Campbell wins top prize at Dave’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards
