Avril Lavigne gets engaged to Mod Sun in Paris

If you’re a fan of Avril Lavigne, you probably think of her hits “Complicated” or “Sk8tr Boy”.

In the early noughties, you couldn’t go around without hearing the smooth tones of Canadian pop singers on the radio.

But unlike most of her fellow artists, she became the subject of a rather unusual rumor – she died and was replaced by a clone.

The conspiracy theory has persisted – with online speculators insisting the singer was replaced by a clone named Melissa in 2003.

The offbeat rumor continues to this day – just as the 37-year-old announced she’s engaged to pop-punk singer Mod Sun.

One fan wrote, “Avril Lavigne is not engaged because she is dead and this Avril is a CLONE.”

As with most unrealistic fantasies, it started on Twitter.

Supporters of the silly idea say Avril has struggled with the attention she’s suddenly garnered after becoming a famous pop star when she was just 18.

They claim she then befriended doppelganger Melissa Vandella and brought her into the studio, where she taught her how to sing.

The crazy theory – which needs to be taken with the utmost caution – claims Melissa took Avril’s heat by impersonating her at public events.

If you’ve overcome your unbelief so far, congratulations.

Then, in 2003, the crazy theory claims that Avril then died and was replaced by Melissa by her record label.

Deluded believers say today’s Avril is shorter, has different blemishes on her arms, and once had the name Melissa on her hand during a photoshoot.

Previous theorists have also claimed that Paul McCartney was replaced by a double after a car crash and that Taylor Swift is actually the clone of a former satanic priestess.

Understandably, even these do not stand up to closer scrutiny.

Banned from Malaysia

In 2008 she was banned from performing in Malaysia because she was considered too sexy.

The Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry said it was unsuitable for their culture and could not be held in Kuala Lumpur on August 29, two days before the country’s Independence Day.

But just days later, the decision was reversed as Minister for Culture, Arts and Heritage Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal said he would “supervise” the show instead.

engagement

The Canadian star, 37, shared the news on Instagram after the musician popped the question in Paris.

She was previously married to Sum 41 musician Deryck Whibley and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger.

The singer’s most recent relationship is said to have been with billionaire Phillip Sarofim.

She said the 35-year-old American popped the question on March 27 during a romantic Seine River cruise in Paris.

Fans raved about her heart-shaped diamond ring.

She told People magazine: “It was the most perfect, most romantic proposal I could ever ask for.”
