Avril Lavigne has been described as “the epitome of a rock star” who inspired “a generation of kids” when she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Canadian singer told fans to “follow your dreams, live your passions, express yourself and be real” at the ceremony in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
The pop star, known for hits like Complicated and Sk8er Boi, signed her first record deal at age 16 and has sold 40 million albums worldwide.
Taking the stage to receive the honor, she showed off a photo of herself as a teenager on her first trip to Hollywood, where she visited the Walk of Fame in her favorite hoodie.
Lavigne was then given a similar hoodie, which read “skateboarding is not a crime”, which she later wore “for luck and good feelings”.
Recalling the trip, she said: “I can remember seeing these legendary names and I never could have imagined that I would be here, this is crazy.
“This is probably one of the best days of my life.”
She continued: “Today I love making music more than ever, I feel very inspired.
“I hope that the next 16-year-old from their small town to Hollywood one day full of hopes and dreams will see this star and think to himself, ‘oh my God, someday my name will be too. may appear’ – because it can.
“Follow your dreams, live your passion, express yourself, be realistic, work hard, hold your head high, believe in yourself.
“Thank you so much for this honor, I am so grateful – to finally be able to party with you.

Kelly told Lavigne she’s been “with me longer than you know”.
“You were with me all the times I broke my heart, your music was in my head,” he said.
“You are an inspiration to a generation of kids like me who wear baggy jeans and skate, and don’t fit the MTV version of what girls want.
“When you do Sk8er Boi, it’s hope that we cling to like ‘oh yeah, we can stay the way we are, there’s someone out there looking for us’.”
Sharing memories of the performance in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, he recalls being driven by Lavigne in a golf cart through the stadium.
“You’re drinking Mike’s Hard Lemonades and drinking red wine, and you’re the epitome of a great friend and a rock star af******,” he said.
“You are beyond any label anyone can give you…you are so important.
