A deficiency is particularly common among vegans and leads to changes in the skin, mouth and even hair. Since vitamin B12 contributes to red blood cell production, adequate intake is essential for hair growth and overall health.

A lack of nutrients can actually affect our DNA, says health site Medical News Today.

DNA is the information in every cell that contains the instructions for the growth, development, and function of all cells, tissues, and organs in the body.

“When the cell multiplies, it first has to make a copy of its DNA. Hair growth depends on the synthesis of DNA and adequate vitamin B12, among other nutrients,” the website reads.

If there is a severe lack of it, this process is interrupted, which can lead to hair loss. It can also do this by reducing the number of red blood cells that carry oxygen to the hair follicles.

Vitamin B12 is important for the formation of red blood cells.

“When vitamin B12 levels are low, your hair follicles may not be able to grow new hair as efficiently, leading to hair loss,” says Indian health website Skin Kraft Laboratories.

A lack of nutrients can also cause symptoms of anemia, which is associated with low iron levels, thinning hair, and hair loss.

If you’re young and have noticed your hair turning gray, it could be due to a vitamin B12 deficiency.

In fact, a lack of vitamin B12 is one of the most common causes of prematurely graying hair.

“Premature graying can only be reversed with vitamin B12 supplementation if vitamin B12 deficiency is the cause,” says Medicine.net.

The website added, “If you go gray due to other factors, such as genetics, zinc deficiency, or medication, your gray hair is irreversible.”

Vitamin B12 supplements are available but also occur naturally in fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk and other dairy products.

Some of the best sources of vitamin B12 are found in clams and beef liver.

Several breakfast cereals, nutritional yeast, and other food products are also fortified with the nutrient.
