“BA has treated staff appallingly, using the Covid guise to enforce lower pay” – Voice of the Mirror

British Airways workers have joined the rail workers in voting to go on strike this summer.

After the airport chaos over the anniversary weekend, the planned strike will test travelers’ patience.

But they should direct their anger at the BA bosses, not at the unions. The airline has treated its staff appallingly, using the Covid guise to push through worse wages and conditions.

Since flights returned to normal, the company has increased wages, but for managers, not for humble employees.

Industrial action is always a last resort for unions, not least because it costs members money for each day of strike.

They were pushed into this situation because bosses refused to recognize that low-paid employees are struggling to make ends meet due to the cost-of-living crisis.

It doesn’t help that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps hasn’t lifted a finger to try to resolve the growing number of disputes in the sector he is tasked with overseeing.

It is clear that the government is refusing to act, preferring to fight with the unions rather than addressing their legitimate concerns.
