Babies created “WITHOUT sperm or eggs” could become a reality after artificial embryos are grown in the lab for the first time

SCIENTISTS have succeeded for the first time in creating an artificial embryo without sperm, egg or uterus.

The breakthrough development isn’t aimed at creating babies outside the womb.

Instead, replacement organs for humans are to be produced one day.

Experts created fake embryos that are created without fertilized eggs by using stem cells from mice.

After a little over a week, these embryo-like structures assembled themselves with a rudimentary beating heart, blood circulation, the early stages of a brain, and an intestinal tract.

They were grown in an artificial womb, but stopped developing after eight days.

“The embryo is the best organ-making machine and the best 3D bioprinter,” said project leader Professor Jacob Hanna from the Weizmann Institute in Israel.

“We tried to mimic what it does.”

The synthetic embryos weren’t exactly the same as those from a natural mouse, but the organs gave all the indications that they were functional.

For now, scientists believe the breakthrough will help them better understand how organs and body tissues form in the early stages of life as we know it.

“Our next challenge is to understand how stem cells know what to do – how to self-assemble into organs and find their way to their assigned sites within an embryo,” he continued.

“And because our system is transparent, unlike a uterus, it could prove useful for modeling birth and implantation defects in human embryos.”
