A man and woman have been arrested on suspicion of assault after a baby died four days after being taken to hospital.
Police were called to reports that tot had suffered a medical episode at a home in Burnley, Lancashire, on Tuesday, March 1.
He was taken to Manchester Children’s Hospital for treatment and the man, 77, and a woman, 60, were detained on suspicion of part 18 assault.
But the boy – whose exact age has not been revealed by police – tragically died in hospital on Saturday, March 5.
The man and woman have since been released on bail, police said.
A Lancashire Police spokesman said the force was called at around 13:20 on March 1 to a home in Hapton in Burnley.
The spokesperson added: “A 60-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, both from Burnley, were arrested on suspicion of assault under section 18 and have since been released on bail pending further charges. further investigation.
“A police investigation is underway to determine what caused the child’s death.
“We are keeping an open mind and will ask the public not to speculate.”
The force said the baby’s family is being supported by specially trained officers and death detectives have appealed to the public for information.
