BAFTA Nominations: ‘Dune’ and ‘Dog Power’ Lead Lists

LONDON – The unpredictability of this year’s season continued on Thursday as nominations were announced for this year’s EE British Academy Film Awards, the UK’s Oscars.

Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic “Sand dunes“Nominated for Best Picture at the awards, commonly known as BAFTAs, as well as”Don’t look up, “Climate change satire starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jane Campion’s Tense West”The power of the dog. ”

Those movies will compete with “Belfast, “Kenneth Branagh’s black and white film based on his childhood in Northern Ireland and Paul Thomas Anderson’s 70-year-old romance”Licorice pizza. ”

But of the directors of those films, only Campion and Anderson were nominated for Best Director. They’ll be competing in that category with some of the lesser-known directors in the United States: Aleem Khan, director of the British film “After falling in love“; French director Julia Ducournau for her Cannes-winning thriller “Titane“; Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Japanese director of “Drive my car“; and Audrey Diwan, the French director of the abortion drama “Happening”, are unexpectedly won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival last year.

The BAFTA nominations, announced during a YouTube broadcast, are often considered companions to the Oscars, as there is overlap between the constituencies for both awards.

“Dune” earned 11 BAFTA nominations, the most overall, although many of the nominations were in technical categories such as costume and production design. “The Power of the Dog” has eight nominations, the second-highest, with three of them in the acting category.

This year’s list also includes a number of acting nominations that might not be on the radar of the Oscars. For example, nominations for best actor include Stephen Graham for “Boiling point, “A British film set behind the scenes in a restaurant and Adeel Akhtar for British romance”Ali & Ava, ” As well as big names like Will Smith (“King Richard“), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“Don’t Look Up”) and Mahershala Ali (“Swan Song“).

Similarly, nominations for best actress include British actress Joanna Scanlan for her role in “After falling in love“About a white Muslim convert who uncovers her husband’s secret past, as does Lady Gaga (“”Gucci house“), Alana Haim (“Licorice Pizza”), Renate Reinsve (“The Ugliest Person in the World”) and Tessa Thompson (“Pass“).

Amanda Berry, chief executive of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which awards the awards, said in an interview that this year’s diversity of nominations was partly due to changes introduced in 2020 to encourage voters to see more of the nominated films. Before casting their votes, voters must view a random selection of 15 films through an online portal, to ensure that they are not focusing only on the most heavily advertised films, explains Berry.

How much overlap between the BAFTA and Oscars nominations will soon become apparent. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is scheduled to reveal the nominees for this year’s Oscars ceremony on Tuesday.

The winners of the BAFTA will be announced on March 13 at a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and Berry said she expects the event to return to its pre-pandemic normal. Last year, the nominees Join via video link, but Berry said she expects the awards to be hand-delivered in March, and the red carpet glamor to return.
