Bahrain F1 GP reactions: Ferrari ‘back with a bang’ while Leclerc ‘tames the beast’

Formula 1 is back and so is Ferrari. At the season-opening Grand Prix in Bahrain on Sunday, Scuderia achieved a superb result as Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz led the team to a one-two.

For the best possible start to the season, it was a night to remember at Sakhir for the Maranello side. This was Ferrari’s 85th one-two in F1, her 239th Grand Prix win and the third win of Leclerc’s career. “He drove a perfect race and secured the first hat trick of his career, which was pole position, fastest lap of the race and victory,” said Ferrari Post race report.

With 31 titles and more than 1,000 race starts, Ferrari is the “most successful and historic F1 team”, Sky Sports called. However, they have not won the drivers’ championship since Kimi Raikkonen’s victory in 2008.

In Bahrain their victory was “comfortable but emphatic” and heralds a welcome return to the title fight.

They not only overtook Mercedes, but also outlasted Red Bull. The Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished third and fourth respectively, while the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez both retired.

Duo is ready to fight for the title

Last competitive in 2017 and 2018, it’s been a long road to this point for F1’s most famous team, the said BBCis Andrew Benson. With Ferrari ‘finally back’ at the top of the grid, can Leclerc contest a title challenge? The 24-year-old’s ‘accomplished’ victory put him in a strong position, but ‘it means little at the start of the longest Formula One season ever, save one very important point: Ferrari are back with a bang’.

After the win in Bahrain, Monegasque rider Leclerc said it was “amazing” to see the team “in the mix” at the top of the standings. “At the start of the season we certainly knew we were going to be in a better position compared to the last two years, but we didn’t really know where,” he added. “And now we see that we’re actually in the mix to fight for the title, so it’s incredible! We will definitely fight for that.”

Spanish driver Sainz believes this is where “Ferrari should be” and “Charles and I want to be in our lives and fight for world championships”.

‘Unforgettable Double’

The Bahrain GP is a “stunning opener” to the 2022 season, he said GPBlog. Ferrari’s return to the ‘top tier’ garnered much praise ‘particularly in the Italian media’, while Red Bull’s ‘complete collapse’ drew a lot of attention from the international press.

In Italy, Gazetta dello Sport celebrated the return of “the red” and the “unforgettable double” for the Scuderia drivers. Referring to the team’s winless streak, the newspaper said: “Finally Ferrari, finally the Reds are back! And like in the fairy tale, it was a prince who broke a spell that lasted as of 2019.”

Corriere della Sera supports this Ferrari team to fight for the world title. They are “strong, fast, reliable” and if you give Leclerc a competitive car, he wins. “You make him happy. Like giving a toy to a child, it has fun.”

Spanish newspaper brand Reigning world champion Verstappen also praised Leclerc after “taming the beast”. Leclerc was “wonderful from start to finish” and it was an “epic” fight between the two, anticipating a “big new duel” later in the season.

The next race on the 2022 F1 calendar is the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah from March 25th to 27th. Bahrain F1 GP reactions: Ferrari ‘back with a bang’ while Leclerc ‘tames the beast’
