Prue Leith says she wants her own crest when she is made a lady this summer – although she has teased that she could have spoons and glasses on the crest.

The 82-year-old chef, who is a judge of the Great British Bake Off, will be appointed close to her home in Oxfordshire as there is a backlog at the palace to award such honours.

The writer and restaurateur was made a Dame in the Queen’s Birthday Honors for services to food, broadcasting and charity in June last year.

She said: “I have a date in May. It was quite funny because the palace wrote to me and it was one of those really polite letters.”

However, she will not be appointed in a ceremony with the Queen or other senior royals

Prue continued, “You’re really good at being polite. It came down to this, if you put it in sober language: ‘We’ve got so many knights and dames and CBES and OBEs to get through this, if you want to be taken down by a king in one of the palaces, it’s going to take years, but you could be damed by your local Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire or something. Or you can have it in the mail.

She said: “So I chose the Oxfordshire route because I thought it was a good excuse to party. And my lieutenant from Oxfordshire seems to be quite a sparkling nice woman.’

Speaking about getting a crest, she commented, “I’m tempted. I feel like it’s really expensive and I think that’s a ridiculous waste of money.

“But [my husband] John is very interested in this because it gets us into the College of Heralds. It’s a really wonderful medieval old house. They’ll sit down and help you design a coat of arms.”

Prue added, “I was like, ‘What would I have? Crossed wooden spoons? Could I get glasses in there?’”

She is currently on screen for a celebrity version of Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer alongside fellow judge Paul Hollywood.

Prue said, “It’s a bit more relaxed. I just hate it when I see one of the bakers doing something that’s just so wrong.

“Well, you can’t stop them at the regular Bake Off – that would be really unfair to the bakers, but with Celebrity… helping them out a little doesn’t seem so bad.”

The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
