Balcombe lorry accident: fire near Crawley spreads to telephone lines

A collision between a car and a concrete mixer spread the fire to telegraph lines and a nearby property.

The collision on London Road in Balcombe resulted in the road being closed when emergency services arrived at the scene.

When the fire brigade arrived at the scene, they found that both vehicles were on fire and the flames were spreading.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Services said: “We were called at 9.31am this morning with reports of a road traffic accident on the London Road in Balcombe between Stone Lane and the B2110.

“Joint Fire Control has mobilized fire engines from Crawley and Burgess Hill to the scene.

“On arrival they found a car and cement mixer involved in a collision, both vehicles catching fire and the fire spreading to nearby telegraph lines and the porch of a nearby property. Fortunately, none of the occupants of the vehicle were trapped.

“Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service are also present and BT has been called to the scene.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus brought the fire under control using a high-pressure hose reel, two nozzles, a hydrant and foam. They stay put at this point and calm down.

“London Road is expected to remain closed in both directions for some time. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.”

It was determined that none of the building’s occupants were trapped in the fire and there are no reports of injuries at this time.

Previous reports suggested that a truck overturned and caught fire as a result of the accident.

The road is expected to be closed for some time.
