“I heard a woman scream from the audience, ‘You’re going to die in hell.’ I heard that and she was kicked straight off the stage.

“When I was in the dressing room, Sarah was taken outside to do her last in front of the camera. Since then, she never tried to contact me. She never spoke to me. I.”

Thankfully, Stephen was supported by host Jasper after what happened.

He continued: “Jasper couldn’t have been nicer. I became friends with him pretty well after that; he invited me to one of his shows.

He lost up to £100k

“Throughout the night, I kept asking, ‘How’s Sarah? Is she okay, is she upset?’ and Jasper went on to say, ‘Why do you bother about her?’ But I can’t change who I am.

“At the end of the day, she played the game. I was gone and I had nothing left, but now she has to live with that decision. She is the one who will take the grief, and in the moment. That, all of me, might think, “She’s going to be hunted for this, and is she okay?”

Sarah took the money and did not contact him

Stephen competed on the show twice – but unfortunately both times lost.

The first time in 2007, before being brought back a second time a year later.

His second attempt cost him the most money ever stolen on a game show – a staggering £100,150.

The Golden Ball spanned six series from 2007 to 2009.
