Banana Boat is recalling this sunscreen due to the presence of benzene

A recall has been announced for some Banana Boats Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 products due to traces of benzene.

Affected products have expiration dates of December 2022, February 2023, and April 2024. Lot numbers include 20016AF, 20084BF, and 21139AF.

“An internal review found that some samples of the product contained trace amounts of benzene,” according to a voluntary statewide recall by Edgewell Personal Care Company released Friday by the Food and Drug Administration.

“Although benzene is not a component of Banana Boat products, the review showed that unexpected amounts of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can,” the recall added.

The FDA says benzene has the potential to cause cancer.

“Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can be through inhalation, orally, and through the skin and can potentially lead to cancers such as leukemia and bone marrow leukemia and blood disorders that can be life-threatening,” the FDA said.

Banana Boat is offering a refund to customers who have purchased a recalled product. The company says you should visit for more information on how to get a refund. Banana Boat is recalling this sunscreen due to the presence of benzene
